Okay, so I have decided to have a website … What do I do now?

Updated: Jan 11, 2022

Well you can follow these 5 easy steps…

1 Register your domain name - or ask me to help with that. A domain name is your address on the internet; the where and how people will find you, your website and therefore, where your business is located, your contact details; what you do …and how you can help them.

2 How do I decide on my domain name? Your domain name needs to be related to your business … obvious is always good! If you are a plumber – say so www.smithsplumbing.com.au The hardest thing about choosing a domain name is finding one that isn’t taken already. It is good to have a few options at the ready, as when you go to register and purchase your domain – frustratingly that name may be taken… If it is free – go ahead and buy it. I use Crazydomain.com.au I also recommend purchasing the Domain Privacy + Protection to keep your personal information off the public record. It’s an extra cost, however, I think it is worth it.

3 Writing your content

  • Know your audience - Use the “Inverted Pyramid” style of writing

  • Be concise. Do not say in 150 words what could be said in 75

  • Write short simple sentences

  • Avoid jargon – not everyone will know what you are talking about

  • Break up different ideas into different paragraphs

  • Use keywords

  • Use multimedia

  • Use high quality images

  • Use headings to make your text skim-friendly

4 Pick a Web Platform or better yet… a designer!

You are going to need a web host or web platform. I recommend a Wix platform because it’s safe, reliable and regularly updated; so you don’t need to! It costs less than my coffee bill each month and best of all – you can take over the editing side of it once I have designed it for you – should you wish to.
